Armour for your battle against the elements

From cold autumn mornings to snug central heating, we're all guilty of giving our lips a serious culture shock as the weather gets colder. Make sure you protect yours this autumn with these lip care essentials...

No frills

If you want simple, nourishing protection, be sure to keep a lip balm on you. These are a great unisex purchase as some are quite matte in appearance. For a universal product, look no further than Neutrogena’s Norwegian formula lip care. It contains SPF 20 (still important in this weather) and is discreet enough for the whole family. A slightly oilier, moist finish comes with the Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum from Burt’s Bees, but it provides instant relief and is great for long-lasting hydration. Apply sparingly and you’ll avoid a glossy finish yet still reap the benefits.

A splash of colour

For ladies who can’t bear to part with their usual wash of colour, try Benefit’s Benetint Lip Balm. Picture melted, red-hot caramel before it is poured onto a toffee apple and you’ve got the exact hue and texture. If you’re more of a golden girl, you’ll love the Nuxe Protective Lip Balm in White Crystal. Packed in a classic wand, it has all of those lovely glossy aesthetics but none of the stickiness. The smell is divine, too.

Back to basics

Before you go and buy something new, make sure you haven’t already got something in your cupboard. For intensive lip healing and instant relief, there is no better remedy than Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. They do have lip products, too, but I’ve never invested; the original article is good enough for me. If any of you are put off by the cream’s signature scent, rest assured that there are now fragrance-free variations (although, for me, the smell is the best bit). Another fail-safe is of course Vaseline petroleum jelly, which few households are without.

Tip: After washing your face before bed, give your lips a gentle scrub with a dry towel. This will help to remove any flaky, dry skin and is less harsh than the dry toothbrush trick. Once your lips are smooth, apply Eight Hour Cream before bed and allow to sink in overnight.
