A waxy balm

Those of you who read Mixed Gems regularly will be familiar with the fact that I am positively obsessed with Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream.

Recently, however, I have found something of a balmier alternative… Golden Ointment from Lanolips.

An unusually solid formula, the Golden Ointment is formed of manuka honey (great for healing), Vitamin E (will aid circulation) and lanolin – a wax extracted from the wool of sheep, it can hold up to 200% of its own weight in water.

What I love about this is that, although it is very rich, the finish is quite balmy. I can apply it to dry areas on the go – for example elbows and cuticles – without having to worry about stickiness. Described as a ‘super moisturiser’, it is designed to aid very dry skin.

The formula is unscented but it still has that jelly sort of scent – think plain lip balm or Vaseline. It is very, very firm (it can take some time to squeeze out) but melts into areas with ease once it has been warmed between hands. I quite like the fact that the formula is like this as it is very handy for ensuring precise application when needed. For example, if I use it on my cuticles before bed I can still tap my iPhone buttons without smothering them in ointment!

The classic, squeezable tube is so beautifully packed – it wouldn’t look out of place on a dressing table from a film noir movie.

I can see this as one of those cult classic products that won’t leave my bedside table! If you’re an Eight Hour Girl or a one-for-all lover, this is one for you.
