A limited edition collection

The inspiration for Jo Malone's latest collection is a day in the herb garden.

When I think of herbs the first thing that springs to mind is cooking, so I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to take to this collection. What it did, however, was evoked memories of playing in the garden and the tranquility of being outside. If you have any memories of a green house or gardening, this is going to resonate hugely with you.

Jo Malone the Herb Garden 2

There are five fragrances to choose from…

Sorrel & Lemon Thyme
“The sparkling zest of lemon wakes up a bright bouquet of bigarade and petitgrain, gently exposing the herbaceous heart of sorrel, lemon thyme and rosemary. Beneath, verdant geranium leaves and earthy moss grow complexity at the roots, uplifting the citrus to an elegant finale.”
The freshest of the five, this is one for any citrus fragrance fans.

Wild Strawberry & Parsley
“The peppery bite of flat-leaf parsley and tang of tomato leaves mingle with ripe blackcurrant before a delicate note of wild strawberry adds sweetness. Leafy violet springs up through the mossy undergrowth. A green and succulent accord in the air draws you deeper into the garden.”
For me, this captures the absolute essence of a greenhouse, merged with sweeter notes to make it wearable and feminine.

Nasturtium & Clover
“Carpets of cool clover cut with peppery rocket get bright and fresh with a complement of sparkling lemon. Nasturtium blooms at the core, entwined with jasmine petals. At its finish, the perennial pleasure of vetiver grounds the fragrance in an addictive warmth.”
The sexiest of the five, this is more on the masculine side and suggests and air of power.

Carrot Blossom & Fennel
“A hybrid of refinement and whimsy, the first impression of just-ripe carrot entwined with fresh fennel immediately hooks with a distinctive twist. Rose and orange flower water bloom brightly with the earthy sweetness of heritage carrot while the floral elegance of iris punctuates an unforgettable finish.”
I remember being in a strategy meeting with the Jo Malone team, hearing the word ‘carrot’ in the name and wondering what on earth they were thinking. But, alas, I ate my words when this sweet addition to the line-up became my favourite of the five.

Lavendar & Coriander
“A garden state of mind takes over the senses when a refreshing blend of English and French lavender opens the aromatic gates with a jumpstart of striking coriander. Earthy sage deepens the scent with a natural woodiness. Finally, the unexpected warmth of tonka bean adds depth and sensual balance to the exquisite richness.”
For me the strongest of the collection, the predominant note is lavendar.

The bottles themselves come in varying shades, each embellished with a pattern to match the herbs of the fragrance.

As well as the fragrance line up, what I really love about this collection is the imagery. The most beautiful lady, in her pussybow blouse, silk scarf and rubber gloves, brings quintessential British glamour to the herb garden. When you look around any beauty hall you are largely met with campaign images of very young women. So when this more mature lady is stealing the show with a full face of sexy, glamorous make-up on, it makes me hopeful that change is in the air. The whole collection is just superb.

Whether you are looking for something completely unique for yourself or a treat for somebody with a green thumb, this is a truly wonderful collection. I get so many comments whenever I wear the Nasturtium & Clover in particular.

And to celebrate the launch, Jo Malone are putting their traditional hand and arm massages on the back burner in favour of something more interactive. During March, they will be hosting masterclasses in selected boutiques during which you can create your own herb posy and take it home to use in your cooking. Contact your nearest store to enquire about when your masterclass will be taking place.

The Herb Garden scents all come in a 30ml size and are priced at £44. As with all limited collections, they will be housed in a limited Jo Malone box, too.
