A couple of weeks ago, I visited the new Daniel Galvin salon at Selfridges in London for a blow dry.

Rikki, a good friend of mine that used to work at Selfridges in Birmingham with me, has now moved to the London store as a senior stylist at Daniel Galvin. You will have heard me mention him before because he does the most amazing blow dries.

Rikki was trained very classically and told not to rely on heated appliances; his blow dries are done simply with hairdryer and brush and last me for days. My hair is very thick, coarse and curly so believe you me he has his work cut out to turn it onto the smooth, bouncy blow that I like, and he manages this every time simply with brushes. This is what I love about him because I’ve always been disappointed with any blow dries that involve 20% drying and 80% straighteners because I find that they are simply flat and dull by the next day.

The whole salon experience from start to finish was lovely. On arrival, I was offered refreshments from the Hemsley and Hemsley cafe which is open next door (another new destination not to miss) and had the loveliest hair wash from Rain. One of my pet peeves when having a blow dry is when you look in the mirror and an inch radius of make-up from around your hairline has been washed away. Rain was really careful to keep my make-up in place and gave me a really thorough massage and wash. I was nearly asleep by the end of it all.

My hair at the time was quite dry as I had not long had my hair coloured with bleach, so Rain used a Kerastase treatment from the nutrition range to give it some life. I found that for the next few weeks it was much smoother, more nourished and in turn easier for me to style at home.

Then to style, Rikki used some of his favourite products from Oribe. If you haven’t used Oribe before then do try their range. They offer such a lovely range of styling products, all rich but not too heavy on the hair, and achieve instant and lasting results. In particular the Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse is one of my favourites for helping to add lift and volume to the roots when doing a blow dry.

I also noticed that the brushes he used on me were fantastic. They pulled the hair tightly from the root without nagging, and this in turn enabled Rikki to achieve absolute smoothness even at the root of my hair. These were called Pro-Forme.

To ensure lasting volume and shape on my hair, Rikki always sets it with pin curls as he goes along. By the time it comes to the end of my blow dry, they’ve completely cooled into their shape and the style lasts me for days on end when normally I have to wash every other day.

The result? Bouncy hair with movement – not curly, not straight, the perfect in between. And in fact, it looks even better the next day once it’s been slept on.

For the ultimate blow dry you can’t get better than Rikki. As much as I miss having him in Birmingham I am so happy he is at my home away from home in London and I can call into him any time! Hand on heart he is the best stylist and such a good laugh to enjoy your appointment with. Everyone needs a blow dry from this boy!
