Celebrating 25 years of Bobbi Brown

Yesterday morning, I went to breakfast with Bobbi Brown to celebrate 25 years of her make-up brand. I can hardly believe it myself but, yes, it's true!

Alongside some of my favourite beauty journalists, I sat and enjoyed some scrambled eggs and a warm Q&A with Bobbi.

What was lovely about the morning was that we had all had a breakfast with Bobbi last year in which she told us her story from start to finish, whereas this was more of a catch up about the last year and what she has in store for us next.

What would you do if you weren’t in make-up?
I’d love to be a nutritional food coach. I’m thinking of going back to school to study online. I think that eating the right food works as well as using skincare.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the beauty industry?
Do it slow, simple and organic, and have a life. Make sure you have something different – don’t just do what someone else did. And don’t invest all of your own money. When I started out we invested $5,000 and that was my last nickel in the bank.

Do you feel that all of the beauty innovations are already out there?
No. I have so many ideas that if I started out all over again from tomorrow I would know what I wanted to do. I think it’s really about women, and not just about who’s getting the most likes.

(On her very first collection of 10 lipsticks…)
I wanted a nude lip to match every skin tone. My business partner at the time was my husband and we sold them to friends. I used to put ingredients on a sheet of paper because I thought everyone should know (she said this in such a carefree, no-big-deal way that everybody laughed).

My friend at the time was a beauty editor and she wanted to feature them in a magazine. I couldn’t understand why she would want to but she did, and soon I was bombarded with phone calls to what was my home phone at the time. I then realised that this was what they call PR.

Then one night I was at a party and I got talking to somebody who turned out to be a cosmetics buyer at Bergdorf Goodman. I pitched my lipsticks to her and she wanted to take them. A few weeks later I was at a shoot for Saks 5th Avenue doing a catalogue for them, and they wanted the lipsticks but I told them “no, I’m going into Bergdorfs”. That day I dialled into my answerphone machine – remember that?! – and the lady from Bergdorfs had called me to say they were going to pull the lipsticks because they had too much. I called her back and said, “that’s fine, Saks want them anyway” and she said “let me call you back…”. 30 minutes later she called back and she said “we’ll take them!”

Bobbi on men…
If my husband and I have an argument, I say “I’m sorry I upset you”. It doesn’t mean I was wrong, I’m just sorry I upset him! And when a man suggests you do something, just say “that’s a great idea”. It doesn’t mean I’m going to do it.

What is the one product you can’t live without?
It has to be the Extra Moisture Balm. I think our marketing team were asleep when we named this product because it should have been called ‘oh my God, this is Bobbi’s favourite product’.

While we’re on the subject of breakfast, I was reunited with my favourite ever Nicola Moulton! Nicola is the beauty director at Vogue and is the kindest, loveliest lady you could ever meet. I spent 3 weeks with her at Vogue and they were the best 3 weeks of my life.

And I couldn’t help but notice Bobbi’s little touches to the room… this one made me smile, she really loves the Queen.

Sneak peek

Alongside our breakfast and discussion, we all got a sneak peek of the 2016 Gift Giving collection. Here’s what you can expect…

The Original 10 25th Anniversary Lip Collection, £80 (exclusive to free standing stores and bobbibrown.co.uk)

Bobbi’s original 10 lipstick shades are back, presented in this beautiful leather bound case with red velvet interior. As well as making a beautiful gift, this would be a really useful set for any make-up artist as the shades are all neutral and essential.

Travel Brush Set, £89

If you do your make-up on the train as often as I do, you’re going to love this handy set. Despite coming with miniature handles and a compact travel purse, the brush heads themselves are full size. This in mind, six brushes at £89 is great value for Bobbi. This set features six brushes including my very favourite Full Coverage Brush.

Contents: Full Coverage Brush, Angled Face Brush, Eye Sweep Brush, Angle Eye Shadow Brush, Ultra Precise Eye Liner Brush and Dual Ended Definer / Groomer Brush.

Glow to Go Blush & Illuminate, £25

This fresh pink blush and liquid illuminator are great for creating a youthful, flushed glow. I’d emphasise that the illuminator is quite cool and glittery, so save this for nights out. A tiny drop of the liquid is enough to illuminate the entire cheekbone.

Party to Go Lip & Eye Palette, £29.50

One of the things I love about Bobbi is that she often works dusky pinks into her palettes. These make the most beautiful transition shades an also work well to create a soft, barely-there eye look for more natural days. A classic neutral quad with a miniature True Rose lipstick, this is a safe but lovely choice for a Christmas gift.
