Val Garland, Marian Newman and more

Today I was backstage at London Fashion Week to see all of the beauty trends before they hit the catwalk. Here's what I found...

Peter Pilotto

Make-up by Val Garland for MAC Cosmetics
Hair by L’Oreal Professionel
Nails by Marian Newman for MAC Cosmetics

Peter Pilotto is one of my favourite designers so I was really excited to hear his beauty inspirations. We began our presentation with hair.

The inspiration for hair drew from the Virgin Suicides (one of my favourite films); pretty, clean and innocent but with a little mysterious twist. Stylists worked L’Oreal Professionel Pli into the hair with water to dilute it.

Hair was parted with a strong centre part, but blow dried with the fingers to create a flat root and a soft hair finish. Baby hairs were blown to create “sweet veils of hair that wrapped around the face when they walk”.

There was a very pretty, dolly themed inspiration behind this look. Mark Ryden and Ray Ceasar, two illustrators, were cited as artistic inspirations.

Make-up was created by Val Garland and I was over the moon because I’ve always wanted to meet her!

She told us that the designers were inspired by their worldly travels, especially Peru, and wanted to create a kind of Peruvian, surf, prom girl. This girl is quite a traveller and this in mind should be fresh faced and beautiful. Val was keen to let each model look as natural as possible because “the beauty is there and we don’t need to embellish it”.

The look consisted of a tiny bit of gloss on the eyes and a brushed up brow, topped with a barely stained lip. Val mixed Prep and Prime oil with Lip Mix (predominantly Crimson but with varying shades depending on model skin tone) to create a lip that “looked real and not like lipstick”.

Finally, we had time with Marian Newman, another member of beauty royalty famed for her nails. With no bottles of the show’s shade, Pink Opal, to hand, she showed us a swatch on her fingernail.

She told us that the airy, dedicated shade was great for her because “my obsession is clear tips”. To create this nail that disappears then reappears, she applied two coats of Pink Opal topped with a matte top coat.
