Decadent, fragrant heaven

A few weeks ago, I visited the Jo Loves Boutique on Elizabeth Street, Belgravia, and it was one of the loveliest most sensory experiences I have had.

You may know that Jo Malone, the original founder of Jo Malone London, is no longer with the brand and in 2011 she founded a new fragrance brand called Jo Loves.

The Jo Loves Boutique is so intimate; you feel perhaps that you are in a wing of Jo’s own house. A bright but cosy space, this is a clean, white boutique with vivid accents of red everywhere. Her packaging is boxed in white with lavish red ribbon, and all of her items are emblazoned with a simple red dot. Apparently, when Jo works, she always adds a red dot to the final edition of any project she is working on. For example, if you were in her team and presented her three different ideas for a final fragrance image, she would mark in red the one that she liked best.

Taking a seat at the bar is very unusual compared to other fragrance experiences; this is literally a cocktail bar, inspired by Jo’s love for a relaxing glass of wine. With lots of different products to navigate – fragrance, body creme and hand and body cleanser to name a few – she invites you to enjoy a Fragrance Tapas experience.

During Fragrance Tapas, you indulge in different scents in different ways. This is an entirely sensory experience, allowing you to appreciate the various ways in which you can enjoy her fragrances.

You enjoy one of the body oils through a hot tagine, inhaling the steam.

Next you smell one of the cleansers through a cocktail, mixed energetically with ice.

In a nod to the original Jo Malone London days, you even have a pre-whipped body lotion of your choice painted onto your hands using a soft paint brush.

After this experience, you will hopefully have chosen your perfect fragrance.

If you’d rather find the perfect candle to fragrance your home, you can move into the Candle Studio. Jo designed this space to be very pure and white, much like the labs that she formulated her products in during the early days of her career.

You have two choices when selecting a candle. First, you can choose one of her ready-made candles, available in a variety of scents, lots of which don’t come as a stand-alone fragrance.

Alternatively, you can custom blend your own candle. If you know of Jo Malone you’ll know that Jo loves layering fragrances. This way you merge two of your favourites to create a unique fragrance just for you. Jo’s Shot Candle technique allows you to do just this. You select two candle fragrances that you like and then slot them together like this.

As the candle burns, it exudes both scents in harmony.

One of the lovely things about this candle is the white jar. I showed this to my friend Wizz who loves candles, and she told me that the white jar will mean that this always looks clean because it will disguise the discolouration that can come as the candle burns and the oils separate.

Jo held a discussion at the Birmingham Town Hall a few weeks ago to tell us about her new autobiography, My Story. She is truly the most inspiring woman, sharing every detail of her rags to riches story and using the power of positive thinking to create an empire that she adores. I haven’t finished reading it just yet but as soon as I do I will share a full review.

The inside page is even scented with the perfume of her signature Jo Loves fragrance, Pomelo. A zesty, uplifting scent, if you like Lime Basil & Mandarin from Jo Malone London you’ll like this a lot.

For now, I would urge you to visit the Jo Loves boutique next time you are in London to discover her enchanting world of fragrance. Be sure to try my personal favourite, Mango Thai Lime.
