Lipsticks to Love: January

Smashbox, Lancome and more

Forget new year, new you; here are the new lipsticks I've been loving this month.

Rimmel Only 1 Matte Lipsticks, £6.99
In terms of consistency, these are fantastic. They’re a unique combination of a creamy, smooth texture but they leave a matte finish on the lips. In particular the slanted edge is very helpful, allowing you to create a precise application even without a mirror. Where they fall behind higher end variations, however, is in their smell. A very strange, neutral smell, this is one thing I can’t quite forgive. Quality for price, on the other hand, is superb.

Smashbox lipstick palette, part of the Light It Up Three Palette Trio
This little trio contains three miniature palettes: eyes, lips and contouring. They’re a really portable size (think the size of a credit card and about an inch thick) and as with all things Smashbox they’re pigmented and long wearing. Given the selection of eyes, lips and cheeks, this would be a lovely gift for someone being introduced to the brand.

The lipstick palette is my favourite of the three, saving handbag space and allowing me to switch up my make-up from day to night if I go out after work.

MAC Cosmetics new shade extensions, from £15.50
Just before Christmas, MAC added some new and eccentric colour ways to their permanent line of lipsticks. Previously more unusual colours would be saved for limited edition collections, but now you can get things like a sky blue or a canary yellow all year round.

Lancome L’Absolu Rouge, £25.50
When it comes to that flowery, vintage-smelling lipstick, few do it better than Lancome. These new lipsticks team creamy hydration with a strong pigment, leaving a lasting finish. Usually with lipsticks you have to compromise on one or the other when it comes to moisture and lasting power, but the reds in this collection are especially great at staying put. The elegant black and gold packaging makes these an extra special treat, something that would make a lovely gift or treasure in your handbag. For the first time you can choose your finish in this collection; matte, creamy or sheer.

Smashbox Always on Matte Liquid Lipsticks, £19
If you want a lipstick you don’t need to touch all day, find your favourite shade in this Smashbox lipstick. This applies like a liquid and dries to a matte finish that won’t budge through hell or high water. As with all matte lipsticks this can be quite drying, so I’d recommend applying a lip balm underneath. I’ve used even a rich, oily balm under these and it won’t affect the staying power or make it slip – the formula kind of seals everything in.
