The Secret to Foundation That Lasts All Day

A brilliant beauty tip

One of the best things about working in a beauty hall is that you are speaking to women every single day about how they do their make-up.

Whether it’s from my colleagues or a client, I am always picking up new tips and learning how to make the most of my products.

I remember when I first met Kate. She works in beauty, too, and whenever she comes in we conduct a full analysis of everything we are using, loving, hating and so forth. I saw Kate just before Christmas and told her that she had single handedly revolutionised my Christmas beauty routine.

Christmas in retail is written all over your face. Long, busy days, early mornings and late nights (let’s not forget the Christmas drinks you’re sneaking in after work) can lead to a tired, dull complexion. Not only do you need coverage, but you need something that will genuinely last all day because you won’t have 5 minutes to check your make-up.

Kate taught me her secret tip: she uses Estee Lauder Double Wear UNDER her foundation. This is one of the best tips I’ve ever been given.

Estee Lauder Double Wear

Double Wear is an icon of it’s own. Sali Hughes even dedicated a page to it in her latest book, Pretty Iconic. It is completely full coverage, great for the likes of me with redness, and it doesn’t move until you want it to. My only reservation is that it dries to a matte finish and I prefer something dewier, which Kate was telling me she also preferred. The trick? Use a thin layer all over your skin to achieve the staying power and coverage, and then top with your favourite dewy foundation to cheat the illusion of barely having any foundation on.

Lancome Cushion Foundation

For me, the ultimate to team it with is the Lancome Cushion Foundation. I’ve spoken about this before and it is one of the loveliest foundations I’ve tried if you like coverage but dewiness. Others that work well are NARS Sheer Glow, Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder and the new Beauty Pie foundation.

The key to making this work is to make sure each layer of foundation is very thin. You definitely don’t want to look like you have two foundations on, we just want the benefits of two foundations.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of full coverage dewy foundations that will create the same effect. Illamasqua Skin Base is one of them. But for those super busy days, long days, and anything that requires a lasting make-up look, this is the most fail safe option I’ve tried. Over Christmas, I was coming home from work or going straight to meet friends with make-up that looked exactly the same as when I applied it that morning.

Thank you Kate for the brilliant tip! You can find her on Instagram @KateBeautyAddict.
