Micellar solution... we're coming for you!

After years of seeing Bioderma (a Parisian brand) on backstage photos, beauty editor must-have lists and fashion week snaps, I finally had an introduction to the brand on Monday.

In an exclusive talk presentation from the Paris team – complete with French champagne – I got a beginner’s guide to Bioderma. The name comes from a merge of Biology and Dermatology.

The main product that I was keen to try was the Micelle Solution. One is sold every 6 seconds worldwide and it seems to be photographed to death… is it worth the hype? Before taking my seat I said a quick hello to MUA Kenneth Soh. He told me that he buys in bulk and had just stocked up on 10 bottles – this, he says, is perfect for removing make-up. Now I was even more ready to give it a go.

The verdict? It’s rare for me to say this, but I think that this water will be one of those things I use every day. The formula is very bizarre. When adding it to a cotton pad, you simply feel as though you’re wiping water over your face; there’s no smell, no real texture and certainly no stinging when applied. What it does, however, is remove every scrap of make-up, including the eyes. As a contact lens wearer, my eyes are quite dry by evening and taking eye make-up off is something that I like to take extra care with. After holding a cotton pad soaked in Bioderma over my eyes, every inch of even waterproof eyeliner had come off. For the first time, I can hand on heart say that this is an eye make-up remover that genuinely is as gentle as water.

Bioderma Green

This cult product isn’t all that Bioderma have to offer. Another piece that I’ve loved getting to grips with is their Atoderm Gentle Shower Gel. A similarly neutral formula, this is great for two-in-one face and body care. This super gentle formula works into a fairly creamy lather and will leave you feeling clean without adding any fragrance. If you prefer to emerge from the shower smelling fragranced then you may not want this, but if you need a quick and simple shower product (perhaps you want something gentle enough to share a bath with your baby or child?) then this will work for you. I like using it to remove the bulk of my make-up before getting really stuck in with my Clarisonic and skincare.

Bioderma is available exclusively on Some of the Bioderma pieces have now sold out but you can order them regardless and you’ll just have a slightly longer wait for them to arrive. On another note, Escentual also have up to 1/3 off all French pharmacy brands! I got lots today so I’ll be keeping you updated on my thoughts on La Roche Posay, Vichy and Avene to name but a few in coming weeks.
