The ultimate bridal beauty base

When it comes to beauty, there is one consideration that lots of us take into account during summer months - weddings.

For the bridal party, weddings equate to a day in which you are photographed all day long, thus reliable and well applied make-up is essential. Whatever your colours of choice (peach or pink for cheeks and lips? Soft or golden for the eyes?) there is one base that I would recommend for bride and bridesmaids – Skin Caviar from La Prairie.

I’ll start by explaining what I see as the perfect bridal base: a fresh, dewy skin look without any shine, full coverage without looking heavy and of course something that will stay put all day… cue La Prairie. A two in one product, you get the liquid foundation in the bottom of the jar and the lid opens out into a concealer slightly lighter than the foundation, perfect for hiding any blemishes and also great for dotting along the cheekbones for some extra illumination and contouring.

In the box you’ll find a sponge for the foundation and a small brush for your concealer. Each to their own, but personally I am never quite one for sponges. Instead, try using a stippling brush to apply the foundation; it is light enough to retain the freshness of the formula but of course you can press a little harder on your brush over areas that need slightly more coverage (think redness around the nose and cheeks). I’ve road tested this in a number of contexts. From dashing around London during a busy day at work to a very late night out, it has stayed put, stayed fresh and even generated lots of comments. Someone once told me that the best way for you to see if a product is working is to see whether other people notice, and sure enough when I switched to using this foundation I found lots of people were commenting on how great my skin looked.

Now for the catch – it’s £134.00. Would I pay this amount for an everyday foundation? I’m not so sure. However, what I will say is that when I came to think about offering a cheaper alternative for you I was stumped. This really is one of a kind and as with all things, you get what you pay for. In this case, a glowing base that makes you look the best version of yourself. When it comes to your wedding day or that of someone close to you (in my case, my sister) I’d recommend splurging. You’ll have these photographs for the rest of your life, don’t you want them to be as lovely as they can be?

Still deciding? Visit your local counter and try a little. I’m incredibly fair and have found the colour match to be brilliant (which is rare), and there are an impressive 11 shades to choose from. Go in the morning just so that you can see how well it lasts throughout the day – you won’t be disappointed.

Be sure to visit Mixed Gems next weekend when I will be posting a bridal beauty tutorial featuring this foundation. Hopefully the proof will be in the pudding.

For a more affordable route into La Prairie try another of my favourites; this cleanser is a more manageable £40.00.
