Bite sized beauty every month

For the past few months, I've been subscribed to Birchbox. Each month, a bundle of carefully selected deluxe samples arrives for me to try and test, allowing me to explore new brands and try new products.

Here’s a run through of some of the things I’ve seen over the past few months, including the current collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar which has completely stolen the show…

MARCH – Lulu Guinness teamed up with Birchbox in March with an edit of her favourite pieces. Here were the best pieces:

  • Benefit Stay Don’t Stray: a unique eye primer that works to hold concealer as well as eyeshadow. If your eyes tend to sweat or crease, this will really help your make-up to stay fresh and tidy all day.
  • Korres Citrus Body Milk: this greek treat is like a big glass of milk for your skin. Use in the morning for an easily absorbed moisture boost that leaves an uplifting zesty scent.
  • The box itself! A gorgeous monochrome striped box emblazoned with a bright red set of lips, I’ve kept this for bedroom storage and it always catches my eye.

APRIL – this was a bounty of delectable treats. Some highlights:

  • Yes to Cucumbers Facial Wipes: although I don’t use facial wipes for regular cleansing, they’re my absolute go-to if I want to take it all off on the train or wipe away any drop down from a smoky eye. These are lovely as they’re very moist and rich, leaving a slightly balmy residue on the skin. There’s no pulling or dragging and I’m not left red and irritated like I can be with some wipes.
  • Laura Mercier Body Butter: if gourmand fragrances are your thing, you’ll love this. A rich, hydrating cream, this will soothe dry skin and work wonders to plump and hydrate rough patches like elbows, knees and ankles. Be warned that Laura Mercier fragrances aren’t for the feint hearted – they’re strong, heady and sure to get you noticed.
  • The Balm How Bout Them Apples: without a doubt the cutest miniature beauty sample I’ve ever had, I got a tiny cream blush sample, no bigger than a 5p piece, but the colour pay off is very rich so it was plenty for a few applications and a great feel for the product. A jelly textured cream blush, this works well with a fresh glowing base.

MAY – This Birchbox is one of the best beauty boxes I’ve seen – period. A collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar, it contains some absolute beauty cult classics. Alongside your products, you can also get a year’s worth of Harper’s for just £12! Here are the highlights:

  • Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish: I’m sure this needs no introduction, hailed as one of the best hot cloth cleansers around, gentle enough to remove every last morsel of eye make-up and still leaving the skin completely clean.
  • Aromatherapy Associates Light Bath & Shower Oil: a heady concoction to soothe a tired mind and body, a few small drops of this will make for a sumptuous bath, the aroma of which lingers in the bathroom for the duration of the evening. Use before bed for a long, peaceful sleep.
  • Benefit They’re Real Mascara: Rarely do I fuss over mascara – I usually wear lashes so I’m not terribly fussed – but this really is something to write home about. It adds volume, length and curl all in one, and manages to give a full coverage without clumping. If you haven’t tried it yet, do.

May Birchbox Harper's Bazaar

After 3 months, I’m really impressed with Birchbox. I’ve found each to contain a great mix of brands I’ve not heard of before and those that are established or even premium.

Be sure to check out the Birchbox website for details on how to subscribe or buy individual boxes. They’re a great gift idea; last year, I got my sister a beauty box subscription so that one arrived each month up until the date of her wedding.
