Safari Chic Steampod

Working in beauty means that I have to be well groomed all the time, and the part of grooming that I struggle with most is my difficult hair.

My hair is quite thick, fairly curly and impossibly dry and frizzy at all times. No matter how many hydrating products I use it is always on the dry side, and it will frizz up at even the slightest hint of humidity. This in mind, using the perfect tools is a must for me. With a promise of 3-day long straight hair, I was keen to give the Steampod a whirl.

For a moment, let’s talk first impressions. As a special edition for May, L’Oreal Professionnel unveiled a limited edition print for their classic straightener – a Safari Chic theme that Mel B would be proud of. It looks so glamorous and is such a lovely change from my plain black irons.

Now for the straighteners themselves. A water operated tool, the Steampod teams hot plates with an attached water filtration system for a steam activated style. I know what you’re thinking – you had something similar when you were 14 – but these aren’t the same as those huge, clunky straighteners we all thought were the bees knees in our teens. This system allows you to customise the temperature of your irons (cooler heat is an essential for me with dry, coloured hair). Think of it like dry cleaning; the steam gives you a smoother, glossier finish without as much abrasive styling.

The only thing I had to watch was that ideally the straighteners have to be held upright and so you always have to check that they’re the right way up. There are arrows on either side of the wand so this is easy to do, but it doesn’t quite give you the same ‘fling them around’ flexibility as you’d have with your GHDs. Speaking of GHDs, I must say that these gave me an equally straight finish but in a shorter time and with less of a pull or drying effect on my hair.

So how did it compare to the claims?

  • Hair is 50% smoother: Perhaps not smoother as an end result, but I achieved the smoothness in shorter time and it lasted for longer.
  • Hair is done in 50% less time: Absolutely. My roughly blow-dried hair was completely sleek in all of 10 minutes, something that would usually take me say 20-25 minutes.
  • Hair stays sleek for 3 days: Completely correct. With a quick blast of dry shampoo here and there I’m on the 4th day of my blow dry, no touch ups necessary.

Yes the Steampod looks a total treat with the leopard print accents, but aesthetics aside I am really glad to have found these. Now I feel as though I can go to town on smoothing out my hair without drying it out altogether!
