Beauty secrets from the shop floor

I work at Selfridges in Birmingham as their Personal Beauty Shopper with some of the most talented beauty experts and funniest, loveliest women you could ever wish to meet.

Here are 10 of the best beauty tips they’ve taught me so far…

Charley on Charlotte Tilbury
To make the most of your Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, use it to create your own highlighter. Scrape some of the highlighter from the Bronze and Glow palette onto the back of your hand and mix it with some Magic Cream to make a liquid illuminator. This works beautifully on the cheek bones and is especially flattering to give a soft glow to a more mature skin.

Susie on NARS
Contrary to popular opinion, the NARS bronzer we all need to be trying is actually Casino, not Laguna. Laguna is quite a flat brown (it’s still one of my favourites) but Casino is a bit warmer, great for adding brightness to the skin.

Eva on Shu Uemura
The best way to wash your beauty sponges, Eva tells me, is not to faff about the sink with soapy water but actually to put them in the washing machine! She puts hers in a bag for delicates with her usual wash and they come out as good as new.

Kelly on Clarins
In between pedicures, mix a little bit of the Clarins Brightening Toner (or a liquid exfoliator of your choice) into your foot cream. This will exfoliate the feet and help to nibble away at any dead skin. Who knew?!

Erin on Estee Lauder
Don’t bother with cotton wool when it comes to your toner or lotion. Erin tells me that she puts hers into the palm of her hand, warms between her hands and then presses it straight onto the skin. Her favourite is the Re-Nutriv Softening Lotion.

Alison on Tom Ford
Alison’s skin is something else. She is always glowing. Despite being Tom Ford through and through, she’s worked for many brands over the years and told me that when it comes to blemished skin, nothing works as well as bareMinerals foundation to cover and treat any imperfections. And as for Tom Ford, she thinks that no one goes back to another fragrance once they try a Tom Ford Private Blend.

Jack on Giorgio Armani
Ever found yourself with a build up of product in fluffy, downy hairs on the forehead near the hairline? Soak a mascara spoolie in eye make-up remover and brush it through the area. Your build up will be gone in no time.

Sophie on MAC Cosmetics
If you over do it on the setting powder and your base looks too heavy, Fix + Spray in abundance will help you to give your skin more of a fresh, dewy finish.

Karen on Creme de la Mer
Warm creams in your hands before you apply them. The consistency will be runnier and they will sink into the skin more easily.

Jane on the Beauty Workshop
For a completely flawless, doll-like finish, we all need to try the Laura Mercier Creme Smooth foundation. Jane recently snap chatted us a photo of herself post-14-hour-flight and still somehow looked better than we all did at the crack of dawn, freshly made up after a great night’s sleep. We really do all need to try this.
