A guide to tanning party prep

A few weeks ago, I went to the BRIT Awards with Vita Liberata to celebrate the launch of their new Trystal Minerals bronzer.

Here’s a guide to my party prep and why Vita Liberata has been my tan of choice for the last couple of years…

Naturally I am very, very pale. I don’t tan at any point and am lucky to catch a few freckles. Although it doesn’t really bother me either way, I do tend to have a bit of fake tan on most of the time simply because it makes me feel slimmer.

Since I discovered Vita Liberata a couple of years ago, I’ve rarely used anything else. The reason I like it so much is that I find the all important fading stage to be completely fine. Lots of tans seem to patch when they fade, but the pHenomenal tan just fades away into nothing. This in mind, it’s very easy to build on because you’re building on top of an even colour. Yes, it’s more expensive than lots of the others on the market, but you really do see the difference for spending a little more.

Ideally you would use 3 layers of this, allowing at least 3 hours for each layer to develop, and then achieve a full tan which lasts 2-3 weeks. For me, a layer every 4-5 days is just what I need to keep my tan looking relatively natural but still brown. There are two textures, lotion or foam, and for me the foam is the easiest and quickest to blend.

As for building an instant colour, I opt for the NKD Skin, a sister brand to Vita Liberata. NKD Skin is great because it is an instant last-minute fix if you need to tan before a night out or your overnight tan hasn’t come out as dark as you might like.

Prepping for the BRITS

Prior to attending the BRITS on Wednesday evening, my red-carpet prep began on Sunday.

3 days to go: Sunday night

First, I used an exfoliator on dry skin and rubbed it all over my body before getting into the bath. When I do this I pay particular attention to arms, that funny bit between my boob and my underarm (which always seems to gather tan), the legs because I’m about to shave them and then knees, elbows and feet which can also be tricky to tan.

Exfoliating before you get in the water gives a really thorough, buffed skin finish. You won’t be able to get your head around the softness of your skin. And I find that I get a very close, clean shave when I exfoliate my legs beforehand. With curly hair I’m prone to ingrowns and this just helps to get everything ready for slicing away. One of my favourites is the Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream.

Now for shaving. For me, a really close shave means shaving twice. Completely shave and then reapply the foam and do it all over again. Especially seeing that the Brits were at this point 3 days away, this helps to ensure that my regrowth is minimal.

Don’t apply any tan today. All that will happen is that the tan will gather in your pores giving you legs that look like strawberries. Use a body lotion to keep your skin nourished.

2 days to go: Monday evening

Before you do anything, make sure that you’ve dried your hair. Damp hair is going to cause the back of your neck to go patchy, and a hot hair dryer on sticky, freshly-tanned skin will make absolutely everywhere go patchy.

Now your first layer of tan is good to go on. Start with the legs (simply because you might get your arms a bit grubby in the process) and work your way up. Struggling to reach the upper back? Just admit defeat and get someone to help you. Shout out to my mom who does mine every time!

1 day to go: Tuesday morning

Once you’ve showered, have a good look at your tan. If you’re no where near the colour you wish to be, apply another layer of tan all over before you go to work. By the time you get home you’ll have two layers on and you’ll still have time to do a third layer if you need to.

The best bit about Vita Liberata is that it doesn’t smell so day time tanning is a breeze.

1 day to go: Tuesday evening

If you’re doing another layer of tan, now’s your time. Otherwise, I like to apply a rich moisturiser all over so that I keep my skin looking healthy and help to seal the tan in.

The day of your event: Wednesday

Check your tan one last time. If you need to, here’s where you can layer some NKD SKN for an instant layer of tan.

If it’s dark enough, amazing. Layer on the Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body – this is an amazing illuminator which really sets off your tan and helps to sculpt the body when applied down the centre of legs, arms and to the décolletage.

This is an amazing blog post, as someone with super pale skin I find it hard to get a good tan that doesn’t crumble away after a few days so I will definitely be investing in this! Could you recommend any moisturisers to use along side of the tan, as I know Fake Bake recommend using and oil-free moisturiser but is this necessary with Vita Liberata? Xx
