3 of the Best Primers

For hydration, longevity and radiance

Primers are, to me, more of a luxury than a necessity when it comes to beauty.

I have a few favourites that serve great purpose, but in general I’m not a believer that you necessarily need one in order for your make-up to stay in place all day.

When I do use primer, it is more for a purpose such as brightening or mattifying. Here are three of my favourites…

For illuminating: Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, £38.50
Wonderglow is the item in my make-up bag that I feel enhances my foundation. It adds a radiant sheen to the skin which shines through my foundation, and can even be used alone for a glow on make-up free days. Use this all over the skin to add luminosity to your base, or if you would prefer a fresher finish mix in a 2:1 ratio with your foundation and then apply all over. This really makes a difference to the glow in your skin, more especially when teamed with light to medium coverage foundations.

For smoothing the appearance of pores: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, £25.50
The original primer, this is brilliant to even out any bumps, pores or irritation in the skin. I use this when I am having one of those skin days and just need a bit of extra support in pulling it all together. The velvety, matte finish it leaves on the skin helps your make-up to glide over it and apply very evenly. You won’t need much of this to cover the entire face so a tube will last you for ages.

For hydrating: Illamasqua Hydra Veil, £32
When you try Hydra Veil for the first time you’ll want a pot of it. It’s pretty much that simple. Hydra Veil comes in a little black cauldron shaped pot and is a clear, hydrating jelly. It contains Hyaluronic Acid so will retain water and keep your skin hydrated. Basically, when you apply it your skin kind of sucks it up and it clings to any dry patches in your skin so that your foundation doesn’t clump. If you are dry, dehydrated or both your skin will really, really love this. Oily skins will find it brilliant too because it’s water based. Use this before any foundation if you struggle with dry clumps and patches.
