Glow and coverage

For every day of February, I'll be reviewing a different complexion product.

Day 1: Illamasqua Skin Base

Level of coverage

Offers a medium to full coverage depending on how much you apply.

This is flawless. Looks really glowy and light but offers great coverage. The finish is dewy but not shiny.

Looks just as good after a 12 hour shift as when you put it on. You’ll have to powder the t-zone once or twice through a long day.

Techniques that you might need to know

This is really rich so a tiny bit will buff out and cover the whole face. The key to using Skin Base is to really buff it into the skin. You’ll need to use a buffing brush and work this into the skin in circular motions. Fingers won’t cut it with Skin Base.

You’ll like this if…

– You are having photos taken as there is no SPF in it so no flashback

– You are a bride – great coverage, fresh finish

– You need something that lasts the duration of a long day

– You have blemish prone skin and want great coverage

Avoid if…

Don’t avoid but prep adequately if you have dry skin, Skin Base holds on for dear life and it may cling to the dry patches.

Products that work well with this

Application will be flawless if you use a Real Techniques Buffing Brush or Expert Face Brush. Whatever you skin type you will love the Illamasqua Hydra Veil for use under Skin Base. It’s a hydrating jelly that basically clings to the dry bits of your skin so that your foundation just goes on evenly. Especially dry skins will want to prep with something richer like the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base.

Everything else I need to tell you

This is one of my most used foundations on myself and on clients. It comes in 18 shades so there’s something for everyone, and they even have little pots of colour correctors so that if you aren’t 100% happy with the shade match you can custom blend a shade. I absolutely LOVE it.

I can’t talk about Skin Base without mentioning the man who created it. Skin Base was created by David Horne at the time that he was at Illamasqua. What I loved the most about working with David is that he constantly wanted feedback from our customers. What did they love? What did they need? What did they want us to bring out? Skin Base was literally created to be the perfect foundation that everyone used to ask for, and for me it really is.

If I had to describe this foundation in one sentence…

This is the perfect mixture of fresh and flawless, gives amazing coverage but looks and feels light on the skin.
