Make-up, skincare and beauty explained

I’m not someone that watches lots of YouTube channels, but two girls that I never miss are the Pixiwoo sisters.

For those of you that haven’t seen Pixiwoo on YouTube, Sam and Nic are sisters that have worked in make-up for over 20 years. Each week, they upload tutorials on all kinds of make-up looks, whether it’s simply something they created or a how-to of a popular celebrity style from that week. And given that over 70% of the marketplace owns their make-up brushes, Real Techniques, I’d be willing to guess that they’ve helped you to perfect your make-up even if you didn’t realise.

Real Techniques Christmas 2015

After years of showing us how to create the perfect make-up look, they’ve now written a book, FACE, with lots of tips and inspiration for all aspects of make-up. Despite watching them for all this time, I’ve learned so many new things from the book.

First let’s talk a general overview. Divided into sections to cover every element of make-up, you can dip in and out of the book depending on what you want to learn. For example if you wish to try contouring one morning, there’s a whole spread with a step-by-step guide that you can follow. What’s great about the book is that they articulate steps both visually and in written format, so however you learn best you’ll be able to work from it. Along the way they share really helpful tips that I wouldn’t have even considered. Their section on eyeliners, for instance, tells you not only how to get the best out of each texture (think liquid, kohl and gel) but what the shelf-life is going to be.

Although someone learning about the girls for the first time would love this book, what I really liked was that they made it really personal and shared their own opinions along the way. People like me who have watched them for all this time would genuinely take their advice and want to know how they wear their make-up, not just an objective tutorial. The foundation baking technique, for example, is explained in detail, with a side note that personally they don’t think it’s the most flattering look for everyday.

The girls couldn’t write a book without a nod to their social media empire, so to merge the two worlds they’ve created an app that goes hand in hand with the book. Along the way you can use the app to unlock exclusive content and enhance your reading journey.

One of the things that I find hard about the age of social media is that sometimes things can look more perfect than they are. What really made the book for me were some quite intimate revelations from both of the girls that I’ll leave you to read yourselves. Given the amount of eyes on them I think it was really noble to mention harder times, allowing everyone to see that you can go through hardship and come out the other side.

I saw Sam and Nic at Sali Hughes’ book launch on Monday (we’ll come onto that in a separate review, another must-read). Over the years I’ve met them a few times and here and there, and I have to say I always love seeing them. What you see is what you get with these two; no frills, just a good laugh and a catch up.

Me Sam and Nic

Whether you are a trained make-up artist or a complete beginner, you’re going to love this book. It’s simple enough to learn from scratch, with enough detail to stimulate even a seasoned expert.

Working in beauty means I get to go on so much beauty training, learning new things every day. But this is one of the best, most informative books I’ve read full stop.

FACE by Sam and Nic Chapman is available nationwide from 20th October by Blink Publishing. I’d really recommend it as a lovely Christmas present this year. And, I’m giving away a copy to one lucky reader on my Instagram page! Head to @MixedGemsBeauty for more information.

At the time of writing it’s only £10 on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk
