NARS Velvet Matte Foundation Stick Review

A balmy, soft-coverage foundation

Famed for their flawless range of foundations, today I'm sharing my thoughts on the new foundation stick from NARS.

Level of coverage

The coverage from this is fairly sheer and at the most offers a medium coverage. Think of the level of coverage you would expect from a tinted moisturiser.

A creamy matte formula, this offers a matte finish but the texture remains creamy all day. It doesn’t set at any point, meaning that you have to be careful to avoid touching your face otherwise you’ll move the product around. It gives a sort of blurred, air-brushed finish to the skin.

This retains it’s velvety finish through the day but will need to be touched up along the t-zone.

Techniques that you might need to know

All NARS foundations are designed to work best when applied with the hands. There are so many ways that you can apply this. If you go straight from the stick, you can then use the sponge at the other end of the wand to buff it in. A very clever tool, this sponge is removable and therefore you can keep it clean and wash as often as you please. I find I get the best results from working a brush into the head of the stick and then applying to my skin from the brush.

You’ll like this if…

– you have oily skin

– you want a sheer foundation that still allows your skin to shine through

–you want something handbag friendly and suitable for on-the-go touch ups

Avoid if…

I’ve tried this on slightly more dry days and found it to cling to dry areas. Dry skins like mine will much rather the hydrating and iconic Sheer Glow foundation from NARS.

Products that work well with this

The NARS Soft Matte Concealer is the ideal counterpart to this. If you know NARS well you’ll know that they offer a pot of Soft Matte Concealer, a velvety and smoothing concealer, and the Radiant Creamy Concealer, an illuminating, full-coverage complexion rescue. Soft Matte Concealer is the closest match in terms of finish and coverage, and will help you to build your foundation in areas where you need a little extra support.

Everything else I need to tell you

One of the things I love about NARS is how consistent their shades are across various complexion products. For example, if you know you wear the shade Barcelona in their All Day Luminous Foundation, you’ll be a Barcelona in this too. This is a lovely option for anyone that likes a fresh, simple make-up look, and to make the most of it I’d really recommend setting with a powder. A lovely go-to for daytime, I do enjoy wearing this but I prefer Sheer Glow or All Day Luminous from NARS for foundations that I don’t have to worry about again once they’ve set. Another huge plus is that NARS are always dedicated to a full and inclusive shade range.

If I had to describe this foundation in one sentence…

A balmy, velvety foundation that sits like a tinted moisturiser and offers a your-skin-but-better radiance.
