The Story of Tata Harper: Green Your Beauty Routine

Meeting the lady behind the original luxury green beauty brand

Working in beauty means that I am always trying new things. I love to share thoughts on newness as it launches, and sometimes I forget to take a step back and talk about the things that are staple in my own routine.

When it comes my ride or die skincare, Tata Harper is one of my favourite brands. I only discovered Tata Harper a couple of years ago and since then I have come to have so much trust in all of her skincare. For me, what really makes it stand out is that I see results instantly.

Tata Harper isn’t the cheapest of skincare brands, so I tend to save my collection for when I really need some extra help. On bad skin days or before special occasions, I’m smothered in the stuff. However, the one item I use religiously is the Beautifying Oil. This little oil is something that I find makes me see a difference in my skin the very next morning; skin is less irritated, more plump and generally more full of glow.

All of this in mind, I jumped at the chance to meet Tata herself this week when she was in the UK and hear her story. If the thought of meeting the woman behind one of my favourite brands wasn’t enough, she was with Alexia Inge, co-founder of Cult Beauty, so the whole situation was just what beauty junkie dreams are made of.

When we arrived at the space at Mortimer House, the Tata team had created a special glow room. The new launch we had come to investigate was her Resurfacing Serum, made especially with a millennial consumer in mind. This serum is designed to add serious glow and when we saw the raw ingredients under a glow light it demonstrated the power of the formula. Tata said that this serum was made with someone in mind that has to juggle so much, hard work, a busy social life, living in the city with pollution to contend with, and didn’t want these things to show prematurely in the skin.

To open the skincare master class, during which Tata would take us through an entire step-by-step routine, Alexia Inge spoke about their partnership at Cult Beauty. 5 years ago, she told us, the two started working together on what they described as a great partnership. She said that that Tata was “one of the first to champion a green way of doing your skin care, and to create a proper luxury natural skincare range. It’s about not having to compromise in order to go toxin free”. I think this is really true of Tata Harper, because everything about her range feels effortlessly luxury and yet offers some of the most green solutions on the market.

As Tata herself began to speak, the soft salsa music playing in the background all began to make a bit more sense… she is Latin, from Colombia. Tata described her upbringing and how she had been exposed to beauty since she was young. Rather than seeing skincare as a chore or something additional in the daily routine, Tata said that in her family they celebrated beauty and had huge gatherings around the house with grandmas and aunties all in face masks. “It’s about loving the fact that you are taking care of yourself and taking that moment for yourself.”

The journey of the brand began to unfold when Tata’s stepfather was diagnosed with cancer. “I studied engineering, I never intended to end up in beauty. When my stepfather was diagnosed, we went to doctors and clinics who all told us the importance of daily habits. Going natural and going organic became part of a health conversation. It wasn’t just about being eco-friendly, it could support health and wellbeing. I became like a lunatic. I removed all toxins from my life; cleaning products, food, everything. Beauty was the last frontier.”

12 years ago, Tata tells us, the natural beauty brands were all on the dusty shelves of the supermarket. “I didn’t feel like it was going to do anything.” She explained that she would go into stores and ask for their natural ranges and see the same ingredients… rose, algae, orchid. But when she did some actual digging, she would notice all kinds of fillers on top of this, and with her engingeering background she knew what some of them were used for. She’d see something and think “this is a form of battery acid, why would I want to use this on my skin?” This, she explained, is because after the actives (active ingredients, like the plant derivatives listed initially) there are millions of shortcuts that are made. “You need emulsifiers to make water and oil mix together, preservatives so that it doesn’t go off… It’s like brain damage to formulate everything from scratch every single time, but that’s what we do.”

Tata Harper use waxes from olives, gums from trees in Senegal, everything is completely unique and toxin free, all to deliver the result. “Lots of natural beauty brands want simple and easy, but we are for the maximum-ist. We’re for those who want a moisturiser that delivers in 27 different ways.” She makes all of the products on her own farm in Vermont, growing 5 of the ingredients herself and bringing in another 68 from countries all over the world. Unlike most other brands (which she alarmingly confirms is in the 90% bracket), they make every single thing themselves and don’t outsource any production. As a result, everything that gets to stores is super fresh and tends to arrive within 2 months after being made.

When everything was explained to me in this much detail, it made total sense that I was seeing different results from my Tata Harper skincare than some other brands. However, what she did emphasise is that we need to find a routine and stick to it. “So many people tell me, I use this twice a week or once a week. If you find something that works, use it twice a day, every 12 hours. The moment you get inside, cleanse your skin.”

My Resurfacing Serum is now number one on the twice-a-day checklist and I’ll share more thoughts on that once I’ve used it for some time, but for now I have to say that I am even more obsessed with Tata than I was.
